Unique Digitisation Service
Viewing full albums and individual pictures
We developed special camera systems to capture perfect images and combined that with our own artificial intelligence software to create an outstanding viewing experience. High quality photo albums can be viewed online through a dedicated website whilst preserving the original layout and all page comments and descriptions. This superior experience contrasts with other digitisation services which use standard cameras or scanners and send you a DVD with the images for you to store. Our system ensures your old photo albums are digitised to the highest standard and can be viewed and shared easily through a private platform accessible from anywhere in the world. Both the album pages and the individual pictures within are captured and stored securely online. You can then view and share whole albums or individual pictures from those albums. The very high image quality means albums and images can be enlarged and zoomed in to reveal unique details online and reprinted to a professional standard.
Museum-Grade Camera Systems
We developed our camera systems with one of the world’s most highly regarded experts in precision imaging. Manufactured in Europe, these camera systems use technology initially developed for space exploration and planet imaging and are sought after by top museums around the world because of their high precision and reliability. The system developed for Eppik is the first time this technology has been used for more mainstream applications.
Not only does this system provide far better results than existing professional medium-format cameras and flat-bed scanners, but it’s much easier to operate, which ensures we digitise to the highest quality every time.
Our cameras mix the best scanning technology with the best camera technology. We capture images at up to 12000x19500 pixels with trilinear sensor technology which corresponds to 702 mega pixels (MP), with true RGB 48 Bit output at 600 dpi. The system can be extended to resolutions of 2808 MP (24000x39000 Pixels) but such a high resolution was not deemed to be necessary for the applications at Eppik. The perfect image size is usually 400 MP and up to 600 MP for the highest quality images. This is sufficient for almost any enlargement of the original work to up to A1 size. In comparison, a typical professional DSLR camera offers image resolutions of 20-50MP and the most high-end professional cameras (referred to as “Medium Format”) offer image resolutions of 100-150MP. A smartphone camera typically offers 16-32MP resolution.
Thanks to this image quality, you can zoom into each picture and discover details you had never seen before, crop them any way you like and reprint them in practically any size, all this without leaving the platform. (Max. scan size of the original work of 50.8 cm x 82.55 cm)
Our digitisers gain special training in using the new technology but especially in handling your albums, ensuring all photos and supports are treated with extra care and attention. We like to digitise your albums as they appear in real life, including all the inserts, letters, tickets, creases, etc. so that the digital copy retains the authenticity and character of the original album.
Scanners are limited in size, have no depth of field, apply harsh lighting, and often require you to remove the pictures from the albums. Our cameras take the whole pages using soft lighting to retain the real life aspect and the resulting images are still crisp and clear.
Smartphones are fine if you just want to capture a few individual pictures for sharing online, but will not be able to capture whole albums at the same speed and quality as our systems. This is especially an issue if you ever want to print your photos.
Professional medium-format cameras can achieve good results and in fact that is how we started digitising our albums in the early days of Eppik. However, these tend to be bulky and require a more lengthy set-up by an experienced photographer. The colour management is harder to get right and therefore print results can be quite variable. Our new camera systems in comparison are much easier to operate and produce up to seven times more resolution.
There is just no other system that can produce such results. We know, we tested many. We worked in close partnership with our camera makers to adapt the system to our needs and ensure our service to you is as efficient as possible, providing museum-grade scans of your albums as quickly as possible and at affordable rates.
Advanced Cropping Tools
Once the albums are digitised, our specially developed deep-learning cropping algorithms will automatically detect and crop the album’s outside edges but also each individual picture inside.
This means you can view a digital version of your whole album but also view each picture individually and zoom into the detail.
Cropping automatically also means we can supply you with a online album much faster and without any further work or cost required. We think this can make the viewing experience even better than the original with the best of both worlds: viewing the story through the album layout or zooming into, commenting and sharing individual pictures. But digitisation is just the first step in safeguarding and telling your family stories. If you have any feedback on our service, whether that’s features on the platform you’d like us to build or questions on our digitisation process, we’d love to hear from you at firstname.lastname@example.org.
